Meals on Wheels™ Australia calls for urgent funding support as fuel costs surge

Meals on Wheels™ Australia is calling on the Federal Government to provide urgent funding support to help offset rising fuel costs, ensuring vulnerable Australians continue to receive essential meal services.

With global instability driving fuel price increases, Meals on Wheels services across the country are facing mounting financial pressure—impacting both volunteers and service delivery.

Chair of Meals on Wheels™ Australia, Paul Sadler, said the organisation’s 35,000 volunteers are bearing the brunt of rising costs.

“Meals on Wheels is an essential community service that supports older Australians to live independently in their own homes,” Mr Sadler said.

“Right now, our volunteers, who generously use their own vehicles, are facing significantly higher fuel costs. We’ve already seen an average 20 per cent increase in fuel reimbursements and more volunteers are needing to claim support.”

In addition to volunteer costs, the organisation estimates a five per cent increase in broader service delivery expenses, including food supply and logistics.

Meals on Wheels™ Australia is urging the Government to act quickly, proposing two key support measures:

  • A temporary 5 per cent increase in the price per meal funded by the Government
  • A one-off payment to state associations to help offset volunteer fuel costs

Mr Sadler said even modest support would have a significant impact.

“A small investment in Meals on Wheels delivers a large system benefit, keeping people well-nourished, reducing pressure on the health system and supporting independence in the community.”

The organisation has also been working with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing to strengthen its role in emergency preparedness and response frameworks, including recognition as an essential service and consideration of priority fuel access during supply disruptions.

“Ensuring Meals on Wheels services remain operational during times of crisis is critical,” Mr Sadler said.

“We stand ready to work closely with Government to ensure no Australian goes without the support they need.”
